In today’s world, 8 out of 10 people don’t get up from their beds without checking their phones. In fact, it is the first thing done right after waking up from a long night sleep.
Smartphones have become increasingly popular over the past decades with an estimated 6.4 billion people using them (about 83% of the worldwide population), making the smartphone market a multi-billion dollar industry.
On the average, seven out of ten persons living in Ghana use a smartphone. However, it must be noted that as far as smartphones are concerned, so does brand matters. Many phone brands have mind – blowing qualities and features that meet our day – to – day needs.
Apart from these qualities and features, there is a sense of security and trust when an individual use these brands of smartphone. Once smartphones are mentioned, the first thing to take into consideration is the brand and based on that, Marketing World Magazine has embarked on a market survey and spoke to representatives from top retail smartphone traders including; Freddies Corner, Telefonika Ghana, and Franko Trading Enterprise on the most popular smartphone brands in the Ghanaian market for 2021.
The Samsung brand was first on the lips of both retailers and phone users as the most popular phone brand in Ghana for the year 2021 with high market demand. Samsung has dominated over the mobile industry in Ghana, and known to be the biggest mobile phone brand in the world.
The smartphone brand has the highest share volume among Ghanaian populace. Based on that, Samsung phones are now the leader in terms of popular smartphones. Samsung has broadened its market from mid -range smartphones to high-tech mobile phones.
Samsung forayed into mobile phones in 2000 with the launch of a feature phone with built-in camera that could take up to 20 photos at a time. By late 2000, the company had launched several phones, but its global success story started with the launch of the Galaxy S series of smartphones that used the company’s OLED screen technology and hummingbird processor. Samsung is best known for its Samsung Galaxy S – series Smart phones.
Some of the Samsung smartphones available at the retail and wholesale centers in Ghana include; Samsung Galaxy A12, Samsung Galaxy A32, Samsung Galaxy A22, Samsung Galaxy a12s, Samsung Galaxy S21, Samsung Galaxy A series, Samsung Galaxy A31, Samsung Galaxy S10, Samsung Galaxy S20, Samsung Galaxy A21, amongst others. According to Statcounter Global stats, Samsung has a market share of about 21.02 percent (July 2021), which makes it the top in Ghana, and one of the biggest mobile phone brands in the world. It is currently leading the market in terms of sales.
Apple is another popular smartphone brand in Ghana. Their products offer superior design and features, which have become more of a trademark brand across the globe. Apple’s brand has over the years maintained the quality of their products with rapid technological developments and growing design approaches.
Smartphone lovers usually opt for Apple phones because of the prestige attached to the brand and how the brand maintained the quality of their electronic products in recent years – and with advancement in securities.
Taking a look at the latest iPhone series, that is iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, there is no doubt that the company is best in terms of smartphones. Some of the smartphones available include iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12, iPhone SE, iPhone 11, iPhone XR, amongst others. According to Statcounter Global stat, Apple brand has a current market share of 19.64 percent in Ghana (July,2021), hence making it the second most popular smartphone brand in Ghana.
Tecno mobile came up as the third most popular smartphone brand in Ghana. This phone brand comes with affordable phones that have interesting specifications for smartphone lovers.
The Tecno brand has recently found a huge market in Ghana due to their affordable phones that comes with highly-rated features and strong battery. The popular Tecno series of phones here in Ghana include Phantom, Camon, and the Spark.
Tecno phantom 5, Tecno phantom 6 were the first tecno phantom phones under Tecno Phantom Series to win the heart of Ghanaians at most. Some of the popular TECNO series of phones here in Ghana include: Tecno Camon 16 Premier, Tecno Spark 5, Tecno Camon 15, Tecno Camon 12, Tecno Camon 11, Tecno Pop 1s, Tecno Phantom 8, Tecno Pouvoir 1, Tecno Camon X, amongst others. According to Statcounter Global stats, Tecno has a market share of 19.41 percent. Tecno brand is the third leading brand in terms of sales this year.
Following keenly amongst the most popular smartphone brands in Ghana is Infinix mobile. Infinix Mobile is owned by Transsion Holdings, a company that once owned Tecno Mobile. Despite the competition among various smartphone brands in the market as at the time Infinix mobile was launched, the brand was able to survive the market.
This was due to the products, the brand introduced that met the needs and expectations of the target audience, that is to say the company brought a lot of smartphone flagship that were irresistible to every smartphone lover in Ghana. From the Infinix mobile brand, there are different categories of Smartphones ranging from Infinix hot series, Infinix Note series, Infinix S Series, Infinix Zero series etc.
Examples of Infinix smartphones include Infinix Note 4, Infinix Note 8, Infinix Note 7, Infinix Hot 9, Infinix Hot 7, Infinix Hot 3, Infinix Smart 5, Infinix S3, Infinix Zero 5, Infinix Zero 8, amongst others. Infinix Mobile are currently rated amongst the most successful smartphone brands in Ghana. According to Statcounter Global stats, Infinix has a market share of 12.5 percent. In terms of sales on the market, Infinix mobile is another leading brand.
China based Huawei, came close after Infinix. Huawei, known to be the largest phone manufacturer in the world has gained much attention nationwide for the Huawei product it manufactures and the brand itself. Huawei has produced countless of phones in Ghana and these smartphones are what have made the company popular as a brand. Huawei brand is one of the most respected phone brands in the world.
Some few to mention smartphones from Huawei include: Huawei nova 7i, Huawei Y9a, Huawei Y7a, Huawei Y8p, Huawei P30, Huawei P40 Pro, Huawei Y6s, Huawei Y9s, amongst others.
With their high-tech phones available on the Ghanaian market, the brand has set the expectations high for lots of other brands and with this, the brand has recorded significant number of sales. According to statistics from Statcounter Global stats, Huawei has a market share of 6.21 percent in Ghana.
Itel gained the sixth spot as the smartphone brand that is popular on the Ghanaian Market. Just like other smartphone brands, Itel appeals to its target audience mostly because of the products’ affordability. It is said that this smartphone brand thinks about students and manufacture phones according to the budget of students.
Itel smartphones are affordable and come with great features and interesting specifications that appeal buyers in Ghana.
Some itel phones available for sale on the Ghanaian market include Itel A56, Itel A23, Itel A14, Itel A16, Itel A33, Itel P32, amongst others. Itel is also a leading brand as well in terms of sales.
Another smartphone brand that is highly received by all is Nokia, reason been its seventh place among the most popular brands in Ghana. In the past, Nokia used to be the dominant phone brand in Ghana, Africa and the world at large.
Although other smartphone brands are taking over as popularity in Ghana, Nokia still ran among the very best phone brands in Ghana. It is noted that the success of the E-Series and N-series keeps Nokia in this list, as well as its unmatched reputation for durability, dependability and battery life, especially among older smartphone users.
Some Nokia phones on the market include: Nokia 9 PureView, Nokia 8.3 5G, Nokia 6.1, Nokia 7.2, Nokia 7 plus, Nokia 8.1, Nokia 5.3, Nokia 8 amongst others. Nokia mobile phones like Nokia 3310, Nokia 1100 and Nokia Asha were all mobile phones that made the mobile phone brand popular in Africa.
